The Miami to Baltimore Race
for the Hemingway Cup April 2002

Thursday, April 18 at 1900 UPDATE:

Blue Yankee, Bob Towse's Reichel Pugh 66 was first to finish this afternoon at 14hours 13minutes 43seconds. The line honors winner was closely followed by Joe Dockery's CM 60, Carrera who finished at 14hours 24minutes 49seconds.

These two rival boats raced a match race type race for the entire 871 nautical miles of this race. For most of the race they were in sight of each other. The Chesapeake Bay turned on record heat and light southerly winds for the finish. Four miles from the finish line at Baltimore Light, the boats moved slowly under the Chesapeake Bay Bridge with almost no wind. Then
with the tide about to change against them, a nice southerly built to allow them to cross the line at respectable speed.

The finish boat followed each boat and handed them a very popular case of cold Heineken. The boats then headed to Baltimore's Inner Harbor where they will be served STC's famous Monte-Sano Coolers from the equally famous STC "Grog Barrel".

Ariel reported in from just South of Virginia Beach, Virginia. In light winds they were hoping to enter the Chesapeake Bay early friday morning and with any breeze at all, they may finish by Friday evening. It is very quiet on the Bay this morning (Friday) and forecast is for more light winds.

Ariel reported that Antares was ahead of them, but they had not radioed their position. No report from Orsa Maggiore, although Ariel reported seeing a ketch with a blue spinnaker on the horizon Thursday afternoon.

Blue Yankee and Carrera reported they were abeam of Cove Point,

FORIMMEDIATE RELEASE
Storm Trysail Club

Miami to Baltimore Race for the Hemingway Cup

Miami, Florida - Preparations are being finalized for an ocean race from Miami to Baltimore tomorrow. It is the second running of The Storm Trysail Club's Hemingway Cup Race. It also happens to be the start of theVolvo Ocean Race leg from Miami to Baltimore, scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Hemingway Cup Race boats will cross the Volvo start line two hours later at 3:00 p.m. on April 14. There are five entries in this 870 nm race up the Atlantic coast, past the infamous Cape Hatteras and up the Chesapeake Bay. While there are only five entries, they have an impressive combined LOA - 350'. Scoring will be under IMS.

Returning this year are the current trophy holder - Bob Towse's Blue Yankee, and James Thompson's Ariel. Conditions on this coastal run were fierce in 2000, with two dismastings just south of Beaufort, NC. Navigators will have to deal with the northerly flowing Gulf Stream, great for a push, but treacherous after a northerly front moves through. The Chesapeake Bay can also deliver tough sailing, as spring breezes are a bit stiffer than the usual summer drifters.

A notable newcomer to the Race is the 94' ketch Orsa Maggiore. It is an Italian Navy training vessel on a worldwide goodwill tour. Fifteen crew are aboard for this race, four officers and eleven petty officers and sailors led by Captain Daniele Falcinelli. They will be returning to Italy in the fall of 2002.

Entrants:

Boat Owner Design & LOA Home Port
Antares Bob Donahue Swan 46' Charlestown, MA
Ariel JamesThompson Swan 47' Easton, MD
BlueYankee Bob Towse Reichel/Pugh 66' Stamford, CT
Carrera Joseph Dockery Farr CM 60' Paramus, NJ
Orsa Maggiore Marina Militare Italiana, 94' ketch Rome, Italy

Finishers are expected in Baltimore starting Wednesday evening. The fleet will be docked at Pier 4 in Baltimore at the National Aquarium and will be available for viewing over the weekend. Baltimore will be hosting their annual Waterfront Festival with activities in the Inner Harbor, which will also include viewing the Volvo fleet.
